Girl reinvented: Dannii Minogue
She’s off the botox, taking on America and so over that Sharon Osbourne thing. Finally, it's Dannii's moment
15.11.2009
Dannii MinogueDannii Minogue has promised to take me Power Plating. Promised. She has also promised to give me the name of a photographer who takes great nude portraits (“Every woman should be photographed nude,” she insists. “It’s so liberating”); to give me the recipe for her special feta and watermelon salad (“Usually I hate fruit in savoury, but this works’); and to tell me who is the best person in London for Botox. “The one who does Simon’s,” she confides, “he’s a little, er, ag-griss-ive.” Not that she herself has it done any more, as you would know if you were one of the millions who saw her being interviewed by Piers Morgan the other night. “See?” she says, lifting up her little cow’s lick of a fringe and energetically moving her brows up and down. “Lines!”
How time flies. And how things change. This time last year, it was all about Cheryl. Now it’s all about Dannii. Where once it was the trend actively to dislike her, poor girl, to wonder what on earth it was that Simon Cowell saw in her — couldn’t he afford her sister, sort of thing? — now, well, we can’t seem to get enough of her. Is it the relaxing on the Botox front? Is it the love of a good (cute) man? Has that old maternal instinct finally kicked in? (She says it’s her boyfriend, Kris Smith, a rugby player and model, who’s all “clucky”, not her; she’s terrified about what pregnancy will do to her body, but still.) Who knows, but the new improved Dannii, with her new little bob and her new moving brow, she’s sure giving Cheryl one helluva run for her money. And America — finally, finally, it’s calling, as it has already rather gallingly done for Cheryl and Cat Deeley. Ugly Betty and Desperate Housewives. These are only two of the shows that are on the cards.
“Well, I’m putting it in the mix. I feel I’m in a position to do that now,” she says carefully. “It’s weird to be objective anyway, but I think everyone has their 15 minutes of fame. And maybe, who knows, this is mine.”
It is midmorning and we are sitting in a suite at the Metropolitan hotel drinking “groin tea”. Although the grey morning light could not be more unforgiving, Dannii’s skin is as porcelain perfect as it is on screen. As for that pocket-rocket body — swathed today in grey Donna Karan — TV simply doesn’t do it justice. People can be unkind about all the work she has had done, Graham Norton can call her a “spoon with hair”, Sharon Osbourne can liken her to a mosquito that wouldn’t go away, but gosh, is she pretty. No, beautiful, with that perfect rosebud smile and those glassy china-blue eyes. Horst, Beaton — would that they were alive to capture it. But then, so she always has been, even in the plump punk days back in the 1980s, when she’d sit on the TV-am couch and gracelessly answer questions about her more famous sister.
As she might be doing now, frankly, had The X Factor not come along. “Yup, I always tell Simon, if he only knows the chance he gave me,” she says, delicately placing one grey YSL Tribute over the other (the lace Louboutins Cheryl gave her for her birthday are still in their box “being worshipped”). The X Factor and Australia’s Got Talent (she’s flying off to Melbourne as soon as one show finishes here to start filming the other there) are, Dannii gratefully admits, what have helped her turn the corner after those bleak times when her sister had been diagnosed with cancer and her best friend died of the same disease.
Oh God, the show’s been rough at times: Sharon Osbourne behaving like an alley cat, everyone constantly pitting her against Cheryl, and then, most recently, being moved below the salt to the end of the judges’ table. What does she feel about that? “Look, last year it was really, really bad,” shrugs Dannii. “I felt out of control. The only thing that could anchor me through all that Sharon stuff was Simon. This year, well, I keep having to accept it’s all pantomime. I’m being given a role rather than being myself and having an opinion. People want me to turn into a Sharon, but that’s never going to happen, so keep those comments coming. It’s good for the show!’
Ah, the show. Of course, everybody is watching it this year (it hit 14.7m two weeks ago) and we are all gripped. “But do you watch it? You do? Who do your kids like?” Jedward, I tell her. “They do? We thought that was people coming out of the pubs, who were drunk, who voted for them, but it really is the kids, too.” So tell us more, Dannii. What about Lucy? “I think the reason Simon was so mean to her that time was because he fancied her.” And what about Danylgate? “Me? Homophobic? It can’t be! I mean, do they know the meaning of the word Minogue?”
Everyone wants to know what Dannii is like in real life. Well, I’d be lying if I said she radiates hot-water-bottle cosiness. But she can be girly, she can be real, if she works it. Yes, there is something cipher-like about her in the flesh, but having been a child star since the age of nine back in Australia (where she was way more famous than Kylie), one cannot really blame her.
That lack of animation, those wooden reactions (not to mention the accusations that those televised tears for Piers Morgan were a tiny bit crocodile) that have a habit of carrying over to real life, might be less about the Botox and more about creating a protective shield around herself, the way that former child stars who’ve never had the chance to be civilians often do.
“Look,” she says in her flat, careful way, “it wasn’t about crying or not crying, it was just the chance to tell my story, my way, in my time. I knew the subjects were going to be ones that were really confronting. In front of the camera or in private — they make me shake. I tried to compose myself as much as I could. In 30 years of work, I’ve only ever cried twice on TV.” (The other time was when Louis accused her of stealing one of his songs.)
To keep that empathy muscle activated — and why not, if it works? — she has been engaging in a little self-discovery. Not therapy — “I have my sister for that,” she says briskly — but in reading around the subjects of spirituality and other people’s hardship. Elizabeth Gilbert’s Eat, Pray, Love made a huge impression, as did John Boyne’s The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. She is very attracted to the Jewish religion, she says, frequently joining in her friends’ Shabbat celebrations, and believes it very important to keep things in the present. “Though sometimes I feel I ought to have a yellow Post-it note on my forehead to remind me!” she says with a good ol’ Aussie cackle.
Oh, but what about these ludicrously good-looking men she keeps aligning herself with? Will she ever transcend that? Her ex-husband, the Nip/Tuck actor Julian McMahon, is a former Levi’s model. As for her current beau, whom she met at a club in Ibiza... Well, I mean, look at him. “Oh I know,” she says fondly, showing me a picture on her BlackBerry of him in his pants taken by the guy who does all the Dolce & Gabbana underwear ads. “To be honest, he’s not my type at all. I never go for guys who are as blatantly attractive as that. But Kris, well [little sigh], he’s different. These northern boys, we need to import a few to London.”
Dannii has kept her promise. We join each other for a session of Power Plating on the fifth floor of Harrods. Looking even more delicate and doll-like with her hair scraped back in a silver alice band, no make-up whatsoever and flip-flops, she has brought with her a little bag of things for me. A jar of the coffee substitute she buys in bulk before going back to Australia (because the real stuff makes her shaky) and a handmade blend of oils I’m supposed to shove under my nose to stop me from getting tired. The Botox thing? Hmm, she’s really not sure she should recommend that to anyone. A nudie photo shoot with her brilliant friend Elizabeth Hoff, that would be a much better “lift”. As for Power Plating, wait till I see how it pushes everything up, just wait.
Dannii Minogue with a yellow Post-it note stuck to her forehead reading Be Present. The cover for a bestselling autobiography, or what?

Kylie Minogue’s bedding line ‘Kylie at Home’ popular in UK
10.11.2009
Kylie MinougueSydney, Nov 9 (ANI): Aussie pop princess Kylie Minogue is fast becoming popular among UK shoppers, with her new bedding line ‘Kylie at Home’ doing a brisk business.
‘Kylie at Home’ offers a range of bed linen, cushions and throws, making Minogue, 41, the latest newly fledged soft-goods designer.
The range, co-designed with UK home furnishing company Ashley Wilde, is a girlie, slightly camp cornucopia of satin, taffeta, sequins and sparkles inspired by the Showgirl tour’s feathered headdresses and Minogue’s grandmother Nain.
When it launched in the UK last year, Minogue told Woman and Home magazine that the domestic side of her creativity was in her blood.
“My grandmother taught me how to pattern-cut and sew from the age of about 13. To this day, I adore fabrics, trims, the look and feel of them, the way they catch the light and work together,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted her as saying.Kylie oversees the product,” Graham Dean, Myer’s director of sales (home) said.
“That’s why you see her coming through in the range. It’s very girlie; there are lots of bows and silk and lacework,” he added. (ANI)

R&B singer Rihanna has beaten off competition from stars like
Madonna and Britney Spears.R&B singer Rihanna has beaten off competition from stars like Madonna and Britney Spears after her track 'Umbrella' has been voted the best of the decade in a new survey.

But the pop star will be pleased to know that her British fans have picked her song and music video for 'Umbrella' as the best of the last 10 years, according to a survey by BT media.

Brave Katie feels so lucky to meet Kylie
09.11.2009
Katie Allen chatted to Kylie for
20 minutes backstage at an
Abba tribute concert in London.A seriously ill Lincoln girl has had her wish come true by meeting her superstar idol Kylie Minogue. Katie, eight, was diagnosed with the genetic life-shortening illness cystic fibrosis when she was just 18 months-old.
She has to take between 30 and 40 tablets a day as well as twice daily physiotherapy, sessions with a breathing mask, and has had lots of treatment at Lincoln County Hospital.
It was her consultant paediatrician Dr Robert Groggins who put her name forward to the Starlight Children's Foundation which organised the meeting with Kylie after asking what her wish would be.
The charity heard that despite her continuing treatment Katie remains remarkably upbeat and never complains about her illness even when she is feeling unwell.
Katie, her mum Valerie Allen, 36, and brother Alexander, 13, travelled from Woodfield Avenue, Birchwood, to London's Hyde Park where they chatted to Kylie for 20 minutes backstage at an Abba tribute concert.
And the highlight of the concert was seeing Kylie at the end surrounded by fireworks.
"Kylie was brilliant with us – going right down to Katie's level and talking about everything from Katie's illness to her own family," Katie's mum said.
"Katie was so made up it was unbelievable.
"She talks about it all the time."
Katie, who goes to Hartsholme Primary School, is now even more of a Kylie fan than before and feeling much more confident about the future.
"The best bit about the day was meeting Kylie – and there wasn't a worst bit," Katie, whose favourite Kylie songs are Spinning Around and Can't Get You Out of My Head.
"It was amazing to meet her in person and talk for so long."

Prominente Sexsymbole
Von Violetta Simon
05.11.2009

AC/DC tops Kylie, Wiggles in rich list
By Katherine Field
04.11.2009
Rock band AC/DC top Australia's entertainment rich list
in 2009 thanks to earnings of $105m.Hard rock band AC/DC have knocked The Wiggles off the top of Australia's entertainment rich list in spectacular style - thanks to earnings of $105 million in the last financial year.
The iconic Australian rock group are number one on the 2009 BRW Top Entertainers List, amassing the largest fortune recorded in the annual list's 16-year history, due to their hugely successful album Black Ice and subsequent tour.
Pop Princess Kylie Minogue is a distant second, with $47 million, while children's entertainers The Wiggles, who have held the top spot for the last four years, have slipped to third place, with $45 million - the same amount they earned the year before.
BRW's Jane Lindhe said it was extraordinary result for AC/DC, who earned about $12 million the previous year.
"In tough economic times people really like a release and they're willing to pay to go and see the big artists like AC/DC or Kylie Minogue," Lindhe told AAP.
Lindhe said The Wiggles had suffered in the US economic climate.
"They've grown, they've opened new theme parks, but what has held them back has been the US dollar," she said.
There are more music promoters on the list than ever before, with Pink promoter Michael Coppel leading the charge, in 18th place after raking in $6 million.
Country superstar Keith Urban is fifth at $20 million, while wife Nicole Kidman is ninth with $11 million.
Russell Crowe is fourth with $25 million.
Controversial shock jocks Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O also make the list, at 33rd, with $2.8 million - thanks in part to Sandilands' Australian Idol TV contract, which he's now lost.
Their Austereo colleagues Hamish Blake and Andy Lee are in 49th spot with $1.9 million.
Geoffrey Rush scraped in at 50th with $1.6 million.
Fourteen stars fell off the list including actors Rose Byrne, Melissa George and Alan Dale, as well as rock group Silverchair and celebrity chef Donna Hay.
This year's total wealth was $469.8 million compared to last year's figure of $358.8 million.
Lindhe said it was a top result considering the crisis.
"AC/DC bought some money to the table, but generally you wouldn't pick that we've been having an economic crisis by looking at that list," Lindhe said.
The full list will be revealed in Thursday's BRW.

Arctic's Alex Turner inspired by Kylie
By Alex Fletcher, Senior Entertainment Reporter
03.11.2009
Alex TurnerArctic Monkeys star Alex Turner has admitted that he watched Kylie Minogue, Britney Spears and Beyoncé's arena shows as inspiration for his group's upcoming tour.
The frontman confessed that he was not an expert on playing arenas and claimed that he was impressed with Minogue's concert style.
"I'd never even been to a gig in an arena. But recently, knowing we've got this coming up I've been trying to dip my toe into that. So I've seen Britney Spears at The O2, I saw Kylie the other week, and we went to see Beyoncé in Japan - to try and see how it pans out," he told NME. "And so those are the only gigs in arenas I've ever been to, apart from like WWF Wrestling when I was six, but that doesn't really count.
"There's not gonna be circus performers or bass solos. Beyoncé had an all-girl band and one of them was doing these daft bass solos. No, there's not gonna be any horn sections. But you can't try and be all coy about it with something that big. I think to some degree you can't hold back. That's what I've learnt from those three anyway. Kylie was terrific, by the way."
When asked about his favourite Minogue track, the Sheffield singer added: "I quite like that one from the newer breed. Is it called 'Slow'? It's quite low for her, she's not as high as she normally is. And she dropped into the Nick Cave one, the wild roses one. Medleys, as well. That's what you've got to consider with these big shows."

Paris Hilton live in concert: Singer says she's recording, will perform next year - report
By Amy Eisinger DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
03.11.2009
Paris Hilton could be on her way to a live music venue near you next year. She says she'll be performing
material from her new album live.Paris Hilton, the world tour?
The heiress, who is currently in the studio recording her second album, recently talked about how things are going to OK! magazine, PerezHilton.com reports.
"Recording is going amazing. My new album is inspired by Kylie Minogue. I wrote all the songs myself. I will be performing next year," Hilton tells the magazine.
If all goes as she says, that performance could lead to Hilton's first ever tour. The socialite-turned-reality TV star has already released one album, "Paris," on her own label Heiress Records, and perhaps surprisingly the critical reception wasn't all bad. Her album even reached the sixth position on the Billboard 200 list.
Maybe it's because she worships a great pop role model: Kylie Minogue.
Hilton recently met the international pop star, and immediately Tweeted: "Just met Kylie Minogue, she is so gorgeous, sweet, adorable, cool and amazing! I'm so happy I got to meet her! Amazing! Huge! I Love Kylie!" according to Hilton's Twitter page.
And that wasn't the only praise Hilton had for Minogue, who's best known in the US for her song "Can't Get You Out of My Head." Earlier this month, Hilton also Tweeted about her keen anticipation of Minogue's US tour, saying she was "so excited."
"I love her! She is so beautiful and talented and such an inspiration for my new album," Hilton proclaimed via Twitter.
Hilton has not yet announced a release date for her second album.

By STAFF REPORTER
01.11.2009
Raunchy ... Kylie Minougue in Agent Provocateur advertA RAUNCHY film of Kylie Minogue in sexy stockings and suspenders writhing around on a bucking bronco has been voted the best EVER celeb viral ad.
The Aussie sexpot's appearance in the advert for posh underwear company Agent Provocateur has clocked up a whopping 350million hits on YouTube.
And the steamy video earned her top spot in a list of 10 best celebrity viral ads of the decade compiled by online content distributor GoViral.
Brazilian footballer Ronaldinho came second in the list in the Nike Crossbar Challenge. The film shows him demonstrating apparently impressive skills by hitting the crossbar no less than four times, without the ball touching the floor. The clip has been viewed in excess of 50 million times.
Third most popular was US President Barack Obama's Yes We Can song, featuring Will.I.Am of the Black Eyed Peas, Scarlett Johansson and other stars, which was viewed 32 million times.
Pink's surprise appearance at a karaoke sing-a-long for T-Mobile in London's Trafalgar Square also made the Top 10 with 19 million hits, and controversial US comedian Sarah Silverman's now infamous sketch in which she sings to her partner Jimmy Kimmel about having an affair with Matt Damon scored more than 17 millions hits.
Nicole Kidman and Ozzy Osbourne are also among the celebrities to star in clips which made up the Top 10.

I'm won over by the Dannii factor

Dannii MinogueThe more I see Danniii Minogue on this year's X Factor the more I like her. And I don't think I'm alone in that.
Chatting about matters of world importance with a friend, as you do, inevitably the subject of The X Factor came up. "You know what?" my friend said. "Dannii Minogue is growing on me.
I ' m r e a l l y warming to her."
I reckon it's a f e e l i n g that's gaining momentum. People are waking up to t h e f a c t Dannii has stepped o u t o f the shadows at last. I really feel for Dannii, always compared to her - up until now - more successful sister Kylie and then compared, mostly unfavourably, to the nation's new sweetheart, Cheryl Cole.
She's had to tolerate wounding, sneering headlines and rumours about being dumpe d a s a n X Factor judge, as well as Sharon Osbourne's very public mauling.
Nasty. And enough to destroy a lesser soul. She has come through it all with a quiet dignity, refusing to get drawn into slanging matches and facing up to her audience in the feverish atmosphere of the X Factor studio when sometimes she must have been dying inside.
She has shown through it all that she is brave and gutsy, a real fighter. She has, in short, won our respect.
I met Dannii when she first came to Britain after leaving Aussie soap Home And Away in 1990.
She came to pursue a music career, like big sister Kylie. She had long dark hair and I remember how striking she looked - Kylie may be cute but Dannii is a beauty.
She was very defensive and a tad fed up because interview after interview ended up being 20 questions about Kylie rather than her own musical ambitions.
That's hard for anyone to stomach and it's almost as though she hasn't been allowed to progress as far as she could because Kylie got there first. Yet there's never a hint of jealousy.
Tonight on ITV1 Dannii is interviewed by TV's Piers Morgan. She cries as she talks about Kylie's breast cancer.
She flew to Melbourne immediately, where she says: "All I wanted to do was get inside the door and see my gorgeous sister and hug her, and it was like trying to get through these barriers... because everyone loves Kylie and wanted to know, 'is she OK?' " Maybe now, at last, Dannii may feel some of that love herself. She deserves it. Step out of the shadow, Ms Minogue - the spotlight is firmly on you.
