10.09.2008DUBAI // Kylie Minogue is to perform for 2,000 guests at the grand opening of the Atlantis hotel on Palm Jumeirah in November, the management confirmed yesterday.
The one-off show at a gala beach party for celebrity guests on Nov 20 will be the Australian pop star’s debut in the Middle East.
Kerzner International, which will manage the hotel, said Minogue would be the main attraction at the “star-studded party”.
The hotel will welcome its first guests on Sept 24 before the gala opening. A giant fireworks display lighting up 43km of the palm-shaped shoreline and illuminating the entire man-made island will be the climax of the show.
The guests will be invited by Sol Kerzner, the chairman of Kerzner, and Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, executive chairman of Nakheel, the developers and operators of the hotel. Kerzner is tight-lipped about the guest list amid rumours that David Beckham, the England footballer, and Spike Lee, the US film director, will attend. Kerzner said guests would include business leaders, politicians, actors and musicians, as well as members of the Dubai Royal Family.
Emergency services rushed to the US$1.5 billion (Dh5.5bn) resort two weeks ago when fire damaged the dome over the lobby.
Teams are working round the clock to replace the dome before the first guests arrive.
The 1,539-room hotel is a joint venture between Kerzner and Istithmar, owned by the Dubai Government. The 46-hectare complex, based on a similar project by Kerzner in the Bahamas, will include one of the largest man-made marine habitats in the world and several water parks. Up to 65,000 sea creatures will be on show.

Fans have snapped up tickets to Kylie Minogue's Australian concerts with lightning speed, both shows selling out in just two minutes.
Tickets for the KylieX2008 shows in Sydney and Melbourne in December went on sale at 9am (AEST) Monday but were gone in record time.
The pop diva has added a second concert in each location, which went on sale at 9.45am.
Promoter Michael Gudinski said Kylie fans were in for a treat.
"Kylie's X2008 tour is her biggest production yet," he said.
"She continues to lift the bar for artists everywhere with the size and quality of her shows."
Minogue recently wrapped up her 53-date European tour, which saw the $A20 million KylieX2008 show travel to 21 countries.
More than half a million people have seen the two-and-a-half-hour show, which features IMAX-sized video screen and floor screens, dazzling Jean Paul Gaultier costumes, and production to rival her last visit to Australia on the 2006 Showgirl Tour.

After 53 dazzling shows in 21 countries, reaching a combined audience of over half a million fans, Kylie's biggest, most lavish and critically acclaimed show to date, KYLIEX2008, reached its European climax on Monday night with the last of seven sold out dates at London's o2 Arena in Greenwich.
It's clear to see why the show has been such a big hit with fans and critics alike. With pioneering graphic staging and theatrical lighting, 14 dancers and acrobats, a nine piece band including a three strong brass section, and 8 stunning costumes from master designer Jean Paul Gaultier, Kylie presented an eclectic mix of classics and tracks from her current 'X' album.
Having 'wowed' audiences throughout Europe since opening night in Paris on May 6th, Kylie raised the bar yet again in triumphant fashion with a production that sparkles, dazzles, impresses, inspires and, most importantly, entertains for every minute of it's two to two and half hours.
It only took one look at the crowd shots on the video screens to see that the fans were wholly enchanted. However they weren't happy to leave the dressing up just to Kylie, many donned home-made T-shirts, colourful banners, pom-poms and cheerleader attire to catch her attention!
At the end of the show Kylie's dancers surprised her by each sporting a t-shirt with a letter which when they all lined up spelt out ‘WE LOVE YOU KYLIE’, and there was little doubt her audience felt the same way.
In a very special message for visitors to Kylie.com, Kylie would like to extend her heartfelt thanks to those who came to see the shows:
