Why Kylie is the ultimate pop survivor

People will always debate Kylie. They'll discuss the botox, point out how she will never sing like Beyoncé (she coos like Jane Birkin) and stress how she could never dance like Britney or Madonna (she barely moves). But as a pop superstar, Kylie is total and utter genius. Why? Because she's remained relevant for more than 20 years, coming back from the dead more times than most (and more times than Madonna, the most obvious comparison).

Her first breakthrough hit I Should Be So Lucky is steeped in post-modern irony. Kylie turned up at Pete Waterman's offices waiting to record a new song and Watermen, having forgotten the appointment, remarked "Kylie? She should be so lucky". An hour later, they had recorded a hit that went on to sell millions. Sure, it's dreadful, but, in retrospect, maybe it is so dreadful, it fits into the so-bad-its-genius bracket?

Subsequent Kylie albums made with Stock, Aitken & Waterman presented a sound so empty and vacuous it represented the decade of Thatcher without a trace of irony. Kylie was the likable pop face of greed; she was cute and wholesome with songs built on pure chorus and commerce. She also retained a vital pop innocence in her videos.

The first credible artist to have a rethink of Kylie and SAW was KLF member and cultural raconteur Bill Drummond. Bill got SAW to produce his discoveries Brilliant and aped their own Kylie formula with his 1989 single Kylie Said to Jason, a record written specifically to be a Top 10 hit - it failed, but inspired The Manual (How to Have a Number One the Easy Way).

Kylie was ubiquitous in the 80s, from appearing in Neighbours and music videos, romancing Jason Donovan or a continual presence on the radio - she was the ultimate pop urchin. But behind the scenes, she was a business woman learning the art of the brand - as she herself stated: "Learn your lines ... perform your lines, no time for questions, promote the product." Her success came with so much ease that it almost seemed like the pop version of Malcolm McLaren's Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle.

When SAW's popularity began to wane, Kylie started to control her own image, rebranding herself as Sex Kylie, a stringent feminist who wanted to write and escape the pop ghetto of SAW. It worked. Sort of. What do you do when your music helped define the worse aspects of the previous decade? Obvious. You seek out Nick Cave.

Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue made an unholy duo - darkness and light - that gave birth to ironic Kylie. He persuaded her to recite the lyrics to I Should Be So Lucky at the Poetry Olympics at the Royal Albert Hall. Performing a duet with her on Where the Wild Roses Grow, Cave maintained an obsession with Kylie's projected innocence, beauty and child-like naivety that he'd had since the early days of Pop Kylie. It became obvious nothing was going to stop this pop mutant. The team up was successful and a hit for Kylie. Her next project, Impossible Princess, co-written by Manic Street Preachers and herself, aligned herself as "Self-realised Kylie". Self-realised Kylie portrayed herself in a mighty death battle with all the various versions of herself. Sadly, Kylie Minogue lost the battle and Impossible Princess bombed. She was written off again.

Kylie rebounded (of course) with the disco-kitsch-and-hot-pants success of Light Years, solidifying her comeback with the storming single Can't Get You Out of My Head. Her subsequent album Fever saw Kylie reinvent herself as a sort of Daft Punk meets Gina X Performance of the Noughties. And she changed again with Body Language, confirming her success at the pop game. She altered the videos this time - instead of sex and innocence, the videos that accompanied these songs were reminiscent of Devo's satirical pastiches. It was textbook comeback material.

X might have recorded disappointing sales and accolades but she'll bounce back. Kylie is a stomping Godzilla of pop culture. Who else can say they mashed up New Order's Blue Monday (with Can't Get You Out of My Head), performed with Fischerspooner and Kermit the Frog, and got covered by Flaming Lips and Tricky (both times they pleaded for Kylie to be "understood")? Who else has tallied up 30 Top 10 UK hits, won an OBE and still have time to be considered "too sexy" by Coldplay? The Kylie brand is omnipotent. She's a postmodern, feminist, countercultural and mainstream hero. Everyone loves her. Why fight it?

Kylie is up for Artist Of The Year

Leona Lewis will go head to head with Kylie Minogue at the 2008 BT Digital Music Awards.

The X Factor winner and the Aussie pop queen have been nominated for the Artist Of The Year award along with Coldplay, Radiohead and British Sea Power.

This year's awards ceremony will be held at Camden's Roundhouse in London on Wednesday October 1.

Kylie is nominated for three awards this year including Best Innovation for her website Kylie Konnect and Best Pop Artist, along with The Hoosiers, Alphabeat, Sam Beeton and The Ting Tings.

Wiley, Akala, Beardyman, M.I.A. and Roots Manuva are up for Best Urban Artist, while Bloc Party, Coldplay, Ida Maria, Radiohead and The Futureheads have all been nominated for Best Rock/Indie Artist.

Matthew Dearden, marketing director BT Consumer, said: "Digital has established itself as a force to be reckoned within the music industry and the BT Digital Music Awards are reflecting this with one of our strongest, most exciting line up of nominees yet.

"We're looking forward to seeing who the winners will be on October 1st."

LONDON (chart-king.de) - Dannii Minogue hat Glück im Unglück gehabt. Die Sängerin verlor vergangenen Samstag (13.09.) bei den Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards UK einen Ring, der 1.800 Dollar wert ist. Laut Medienberichten war die kleine Schwester von Kylie Minogue die Moderatorin der Preisverleihung in London. Das Schmuckstück fiel ihr bei einem Gag herunter. Allerdings blieb es nicht lange verschwunden. Ein zwölfjähriger Fan fand den Ring und brachte ihn zurück. Dannii sagte dazu: "Ich freue mich so, dass er gefunden wurde." The X Factor judge lost the band while being gunged at the Nickelodeon Awards on Saturday.

But after reading our story in TV Biz, Kieran Price, 12, got in touch and returned the jewellery.

Dannii, 36, said: “I’m so happy it’s been found. I cannot thank Kieran enough and send my heartfelt thanks from LA.

“Soon as I am back in London I’ll send a big thank you.”

The long and the short of it

Being a Kylie fan and having worked with her on photoshoots before, I can’t say enough about how gorgeous she is. But I have to admit I preferred the cute curly crop she had before getting long darker hair extensions.

Often, when a woman goes through such gruelling treatment for cancer, they yearn to reclaim their sexiest self. And, for many, “sexy” means long flowing locks. This is what Kylie has gone for with her new look.

Leave it to the experts

Kylie’s extensions look healthy and are understated – so they appear real. But beware, girls, if you want to follow her lead then get ready to fork out some serious cash.

The best extensions are created by real experts in this field and they don’t come cheap. For a full head you can expect to pay between £700 and £1,000 and they’ll only last about three months before you’ll need to have them taken out and put in again.

I’m not saying that they’re not a good idea for adding length, thickness or colour but they are an investment and need to be maintained very carefully.

Less is more

Most extension specialists will recommend a course of home hair care products costing up to £50 for the basics. I’ve used and recommended Racoon International’s products and extensions (www.racooninternational.com) for years and if you see the Racoon name being used at a salon then you know it’s a professional service. The operators are really well trained and Racoon uses great quality hair.

On the X Factor Dannii Minogue famously fell out with her fellow judge Sharon Osbourne, to the extent that Sharon left the show.

But it wasn't Sharon who was behind this filthy shower of green slime.

Dannii was coated in the gunk as she hosted the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards UK today at London's Excel centre.

In her purple and silver frock and designer heels Kylie's little sister looked every inch the glamorous pop star when she arrived at the event.

The 36-year-old screamed and raised her clenched fists in horror, before setting her jaw in a clenched scowl.

Ironically when Dannii had earlier told reporters that she hoped to see fellow X Factor judge Simon Cowell get gunged.

'I’d slime Simon of course,' she said. 'But could he handle it? Or would we finally see Mr Nasty lose his cool on TV? We’ll have to wait and see.'

The X Factor is up for a gong at the awards, which will be screened air on September 20. It faces Doctor Who, Britain’s Got Talent and Harry Hill’s TV Burp for Favourite Winner prize.

The X Factor judge wants to find a relationship that's as good as theirs.

‘I curse my parents,’ she says. ‘I say to them: “It’s your fault I’m single.”

'They have been married forever and have the best relationship, and we have too much to live up to.

'They gave us such a great childhood. My mum stayed at home while my dad went to work and I have such high hopes to recreate that.’

Dannii, 36, is dating rugby hunk Kris Smith.

She was briefly married to actor Julian McMahon, 40, in the 90s and was engaged to Formula 1 driver Jacques Villeneuve.

Wow! Kylie Minogue to be paid £2million for 60-minute set at Dubai hotel opening party

It is the most hotly-anticipated new holiday resort on earth - so what better way to celebrate its opening than with a party to end all parties.

Owners of the sole resort on Dubai's extraordinary Palm Jumeirah manmade island are throwing the most expensive private party ever staged - at a cost of more than £16 million for the one-night bash.

Kylie Minogue is being paid an astonishing £2 million to perform a 60-minute set for 2,000 A-list guests at the party on November 20, making her performance among the best paid in entertainment history.

The gig, to open the Atlantis hotel which shoots skyward from the outer ring of the Palm, will be a highlight of the night which also includes a colossal firework display costing a further £3 million.

The display designers - Grucci's - put on the Beijing Olympic fireworks but promise this display will be 'more expensive, more expansive and more complex' than both of the opening and closing Olympics firework displays put back to back.

The display will light up the entire 43 km of coastline of the Palm, an island whose beachside homes have already been bought up at a terrific rate by celebrities across the world.

Catering and further entertainment for the party itself will stretch to another £1.5 million with dinner designed by four Michelin-starred chefs including Giorgio Locatelli and Nobu Matsuhisa.

A stellar guestlist including politicians, actors, musicians and royalty will be flown in from around the world and will also be accommodated free at the resort. That is costing some £5,000 per head - a further £10 million.

The last time an Atlantic resort launched in the Bahamas, the gueslist included John Travolta, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and Stevie Wonder. This time, a wealth of premiership footballers will also be there, with the likes of The Beckhams already owning a home on the Palm.

The hotel itself is 'based on the Lost City of Atlantis', and despite its rather garish appearance inside and out, is a construction masterpiece rising 400ft into the sky where nothing but sea had been just five years ago.

The hotel has 17 restaurants, a water park and some of the most extravagant suites on earth.

The Lost Chambers suites look out through huge underwater picture windows into the resort's 11 million litre lagoon, stocked with 65,000 fish, sharks and rays.

If money is no object, the Bridge Suite spans the archway between the hotel's two towers.

A British family are the first bookers, paying £45,000 for three nights: for that, they get three bedrooms, four staff and a gold-leafed dining table seating 18. Though that price is bed and breakfast only.

A spokesman for the resort refused to confirm how much was being spent on the launch party.

Kylie Minogue closes in on Wiggles' wealth

Number two ... Kylie nearly kicked the Wiggles off top spot

KYLIE Minogue is closing in on the Wiggles' dominance of Australia's entertainment rich list.

The singer earned $40 million in the last year to see her clinch second spot on the annual BRW Top 50 Entertainers list.

Minogue's fortune is closer than anyone has got to children's entertainers the Wiggles in years.

They took the top position for the fourth year running after amassing $45 million in 2007-08 - $5 million less than they earned the previous year.

BRW editor-in-chief Sean Aylmer said Kylie's growing fortune, up $13 million, was in part thanks to her sell-out world tour.

"Her extremely successful world tour explains why she has done so well," Aylmer said.

"Performers earn more now through performing rather than CD sales."

Rounding out the top five are rich list veterans actors Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman and children's entertainers Hi-5.

Nicole Kidman, who gave birth to daughter Sunday Rose this year, was notably absent from the top 10.

Her income was $4.5 million this year, compared with $35 million the year before.

"Actors tend to change a lot," Aylmer said.

Kidman's husband, country singing star Keith Urban, is seventh with $12.3 million, behind actress Cate Blanchett on $14 million.

Rock Group AC/DC, filmmakers James Wan and Leigh Whannell and Anthony LaPaglia have also made the top 10.

Aylmer said this year's list saw surprise inclusions from artists, models and tribute groups.

"It's a much more diverse list this year than normal," he said.

The new face of David Jones, Miranda Kerr, made $3.6 million to come in at 25th, ahead of her Myer rival Jennifer Hawkins - two spots behind with $3.3 million.

Aylmer said the most impressive debut was the Pink Floyd tribute band, The Australian Pink Floyd Show, which came in at 14th after earning $6.5 million.

An ABBA tribute band was also on the list.

Actors and musicians dominated the list while five authors made the list, including Bryce Courtenay.

Broadcaster Alan Jones earned about $5 million to come in at 21.

Sie fügte hinzu: "Es machen Gerüchte über mein neues Interesse an der Rugby-Liga die Runde und die Zeitungen schreiben, dass ich einen Ex-Leeds-Spieler date. Hm, was kann ich sagen? Also, ich weiß im Moment nichts über das Spiel, aber es gibt einen guten Grund, um mit dem Lernen anzufangen!"

Übrigens: Dannii Minogue würde sich ohne zu zögern noch einmal für den "Playboy" ausziehen. Zum ersten Mal ließ sich die kleine Schwester von Kylie Minogue vor 13 Jahren für das Männermagazin ablichten. Der britischen Zeitschrift “New!” sagte die heute 36-Jährige: “Ich habe mich für den ‘Playboy’ ablichten lassen, als das cool war und ich habe mich und viele andere damit schockiert, aber ich habe mich in dieser Zeit befreit. Ich würde es wieder tun. Wenn das Geld stimmt, dann sicher. Wer weiß, vielleicht passiert es schon in diesem Jahr.”

Kylie Minogue's sister Dannii says she would love to strip for a second spread in Playboy - 13 years after she first appeared in the men's magazine.

The 36-year-old beauty - who first bared all in Playboy at the age of 23 - would consider flaunting her figure for the second time if she was offered enough money.

She told Britain's New! magazine: "I did Playboy when it was cool and I shocked myself and many others, but it was liberating at the time. I would I do it again.

"If the money was right, then sure. Who knows, it might happen this year, too."

Dannii revealed she was first inspired to appear in the magazine following the breakdown of her marriage to Fantastic Four actor Julian McMahon, which ended in 1995 after less than two years.

She said at the time: "I had just had a marriage break-up. Most women go to the hairdressers - I did Playboy.

"I chose the photographer, the location, what I did or didn't want to wear and everything else about the pictures. I found it a really liberating, empowering experience."

DANNII Minogue has revealed she is seeing a giant former English rugby league player.

Dannii, who is starring as a judge on British reality singing program, X Factor, has started seeing 193cm-tall Kris Smith, a man mountain, who played for Leeds and Halifax in the British Super League.

In a magazine column, 157cm-tall Dannii writes: 'Rumours are flying about my new-found interest in the Rugby League, and the papers say I’m dating an ex Leeds player…Hmm what can I tell you?

'Well, I currently don’t know anything about the game, but there’s a good reason to start learning!

'Let’s put it this way, Cupid had asked for his arrow back! I’m not one to reveal much about my love life, but I’m a happy girl,' she said.

Dannii, the 36-year-old younger sister of Kylie, first met 30-year-old Kris on holiday in Ibiza, Spain.

"He can't believe his luck and has been showing off intimate photos of him and Dannii together on dates, one even shows her in a skimpy red bikini," Kris' friend told The Sun newspaper in the UK.

"Kris is a big lad who's in great shape physically, but he's just been bowled over by Dannii's interest in him. He wants to make it work."

Dannii, who was engaged to former Formula One racing car driver Jacques Villeneuve, married to Nip/Tuck star Julian McMahon in 1992. They divorced a year later.

She recently revealed that, although she is happily single, she’d give everything up for "the right man."

"It's very difficult to ask any guy to compete with the kind of schedule that is required to really do this kind of career.

"So I don't have the highest hopes of ever being in a relationship," she told Cosmopolitan magazine.

"I'm just a normal girl with feelings who likes cuddles. I don't want to be alone."

X FACTOR judge Dannii Minogue is secretly dating a rugby league hunk, The Sun can reveal.

The gorgeous singer has been seeing man mountain Kris Smith since meeting him on holiday in Ibiza.

Sources say Kris — who played for leading clubs, including Halifax and Leeds — was “smitten” by the petite Aussie, 36.

A pal said: “He can’t believe his luck and has been showing off intimate photos of him and Dannii together on dates. One even shows her in a skimpy red bikini.

“Kris is a big lad who’s in great shape physically. But he’s just been bowled over by Dannii’s interest in him. He wants to make it work.”

Kris, from Manchester, jetted out to the party island with friends last month to celebrate his 30th birthday.

The 6ft 4in giant retired from playing earlier this year and moved into coaching.

Meanwhile, the 5ft 2in brunette — once engaged to former F1 driver Jacques Villeneuve — has admitted she is “picky” when it comes to men.

Dannii recently said: “It’s too easy to say that successful, independent women are single because they focus too much on their work.

“If the right guy came along I’d be happy, but I’m picky.

“And not everybody has to get married and have children to be happy.”

A spokesman for Dannii said last night: “She does not wish to comment on her private life.”
