Minogue stürzt Moss vom Thron
Neue Stil-Ikone - Kylie ist die bestgekleidete Frau des Jahres

07.01.2007

Kylie Minogue
Französischer Chic, Pariser Eleganz: Kylie Minogue
an Silvester, beim verlassen ihres Hauses.

Sexy ohne goldene Hotpants

Kylie better dressed than Kate

Best dressed... Kylie Minogue | Picture: kya.pytalhost.net

KYLIE Minogue has toppled Kate Moss from a British fashion magazine's best-dressed list.

The 38-year-old Australian singer was awarded the number one spot for her sophisticated new look after time away from the spotlight recovering from breast cancer.

Supermodel Moss slipped to fourth place in the fashion rankings - while her boyfriend Pete Doherty was named the worst dressed male.

Minogue was 26th in last year's list.

But Glamour editor Jo Elvin said: "We've seen a newer, softer-looking Kylie emerge this year - she's still sexy, but she's not flaunting that side of herself in gold hotpants any more.

"She's letting it shine through subtly, with a classic personal style that women really identify with."

The pop princess has adopted a Parisian chic look since moving to the French capital with boyfriend Olivier Martinez.

But she hasn't abandoned her showgirl style altogether - the singer is currently wowing British fans on her comeback tour with a succession of spectacular outfits.

David Beckham was crowned best dressed man.

Doherty topped the worst dressed man stakes, followed by Britney Spears's ex Kevin Federline, Russell Brand and Australian singer Peter Andre.

Kylie Minogue - Exhibits - Hot-Pants
Kylie exhibits are Australian hit

The changing image of Kylie Minogue, one of the most popular contemporary style icons, will be the focus of a new exhibition at the V&A. Featuring performance costumes, accessories, album covers, photographs, music and video, the exhibition will look at how Kylie, as a performer, has used her wardrobe to create an image that is known worldwide. The exhibitions is on view 8 February to 10 June 2007

Originating from the Arts Centre, Melbourne and touring from London to Manchester Art Gallery and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow, the exhibition will include around 200 objects. On display will be 45 costumes and around 60 photographs. There will be a look backstage, where visitors can see sketchbooks, designs and video footage showing preparations for a Kylie tour.

The exhibition shows Kylie’s continually changing image, from 1988 onwards, from the overalls she wore as Charlene in Neighbours (1988) and the gold lamé hotpants she wore in her Spinning Around video (2000) to the white hooded jumpsuit she wore in the video for Can’t get you out of my head (2001) and the corsets by Galliano for the Showgirls tour in 2004.

The exhibition will highlight Kylie’s collaborations with leading designers, including Dolce & Gabbana, who created the complete wardrobe for the KylieFever 2002 tour, and Julien Macdonald who designed the crystal-encrusted wardrobe for the On a Night Like This 2000 tour, as well as designers such as Helmut Lang and Manolo Blahnik. It will also feature costumes Kylie has created herself in collaboration with William Baker, her London-based creative director and stylist, such as the pink "Dancing Queen" outfit she wore for the Intimate and Live tour (1998).

Speaking about the exhibition, Kylie said "The V&A is renowned for its superb fashion and performance collections and there isn’t a better place for this exhibition to be launched in the UK. I feel honoured to have such an important part of my career, and something so personal to me, being recognized in this way." Kylie - The Exhibition is sponsored by Evian, fulfilling Kylie's wish that entry should be free.

‘Kylie’ is published by V&A Publications in association with the Arts Centre, Melbourne to accompany the exhibition. The book includes a preface by Kylie Minogue and an introduction by William Baker. It will be available in paperback at £19.99 and as a special edition hardback at £35.00.

Kylie is 'greatest gay icon' of all time
Publisher: Jon Land

Kylie Minogue
Kylie is 'greatest gay icon' of all time

Pop princess Kylie Minogue has been hailed as the greatest gay icon of all time.

The Aussie songstress bounced back last year after receiving the all clear from her cancer battle and is firmly back in the hearts of her gay fans.

Runner-up in the poll was another diminutive dame - Country and Western legend Dolly Parton.

Busty Dolly won the admiration of an army of gay fans with camp anthems like ‘9 to 5’ and ‘Jolene’.

Over 5,000 gay men and women took part in the poll by global market research specialists Onepoll.com which revealed Sweden’s biggest export - ABBA - came in third place.

Ostentatious outfits, cheesy pop songs and dodgy dance moves have secured their place as true gay icons.

In fourth place was Judy Garland, whose lifelong battles with drink, drugs and men, have assured her a permanent place in gay iconography.

Her daughter Liza Minnelli was not far behind in 10th place.

Never ones to be left out, the Beckhams featured prominently - David in sixth place and Victoria at number 12.

John Sewell, spokesman for www.Onepoll.com, said: "Kylie Minogue epitomises everything a gay icon should be. She’s glamorous, fun, stylish and just a little bit kitsch.

"These results reveal a really diverse bunch of people. You have the obvious choices like Doris Day and Judy Garland, but it’s great to see the likes of Richard and Judy and Jordan and Peter in there.

"I’m sure they’ll all be proud to be labelled gay icons - it’s a real honour and can do wonders for your celebrity status."

Madonna was placed at seventh place just ahead of Breakfast at Tiffany’s star Audrey Hepburn.

Lovebirds Katie Price aka Jordan and Peter Andre were voted the ninth greatest gay icons in the poll.

Talking of his huge gay following, Peter said last year: "To me it’s flattering for anyone to come on to you no matter what sex they are.

"It makes no difference who's coming on to you. Obviously I’m with Katie and I care about her most of all, but I still find it flattering."

Another celebrity couple to appear in the poll were Charlotte Church and her live-in lover Gavin Henson.

The perma-tanned rugger player came in 49th place but Charlotte was placed at a more respectable 38th.

Foul mouthed chef Gordon Ramsay scraped in to the poll at number 50.

KYLIE RELEASES NEW LIVE ALBUM ON 8TH JANUARY!
04.01.2007

Kylie releases the live album 'Kylie Showgirl Homecoming Live', on January 8th.

Kylie Minogue

The album was recorded in Sydney on the second night of Kylie's current tour and features songs spanning her entire career. It also features a very special version of 'Kids', where Kylie is joined onstage by old friend Bono, in an appearance which brought the house down.

The tour opened in Sydney in November and toured Australia throughout November and December. It opened in the UK with a very special show at Wembley Arena on New Year's Eve and continues with a further 6 dates at Wembley and 6 at the Manchester Evening News Arena, ending there on Jan 19. All dates are sold-out.

The tour garnered Kylie some of the best live reviews of her career, including the following:

"It was Kylie's imagination and professionalism which established the historic Showgirl Homecoming concept as a new benchmark for the pop concert. Simply, Minogue is the best act in town when it comes to pop." Daily Telegraph

"Last night's fab show proved beyond doubt that she is still the Princess of Pop." Daily Mirror

"It was a glorious moment for the pop princess when she returned to the stage last night. The opening show of the 20 date tour was nothing less than a triumph." The Sun Herald

"Kylie's Showgirl Homecoming had everyone spinning around with delirium.
The aspect of the show that had all the major critics buzzing was the power and range of Kylie's voice... she delivered note-perfect renditions of the difficult 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' and 'Confide In Me'." Daily Telegraph, Sydney

The live album was produced by Kylie's long-time musical director Steve Anderson.

Kylie continues work on her brand new studio album for release later this year. She already plays a new song on the tour - "White Diamond" which she co-wrote and recorded in New York with the Scissor Sisters.

Kylie: the history
03.01.2007

Kylie Minogue
Kylie had a No 1 hit with
'I Should Be So Lucky' in 1987

Kylie Minogue is like a boomerang. She just keeps coming back.

The soap star turned iconic celebrity has reinvented herself countless times over the past 20 years.

She has undergone a metamorphosis from 80s permed blonde to cropped-haired cool.

So this weekend, a few months after getting the all-clear from breast cancer, the pop princess steps back into the spotlight.

Here we look back over time at the Kylie phenomenon.

May 1968 - Kylie is born in Melbourne, Australia.

1985 - The cute blonde appears as dungarees-wearing mechanic Charlene in Aussie soap Neighbours, having previously starred in TV shows such as Skyways, The Henderson Kids and The Sullivans.

July 1987 - After an impromptu performance of the Little Eva classic Loco-motion at a charity event, Kylie is signed to Mushroom Records and releases the song as a single.

It stays at the top of the Aussie charts for a staggering seven weeks.

Later that year she travels to London to meet music moguls Stock, Aitken & Waterman, where they write I Should Be So Lucky while she waits outside the studio.

December 1987 - I Should Be So Lucky reaches the top spot in Australia, France, Germany, Japan and the UK.

July 1988 - Her eponymous debut album Kylie enters both the UK and Australian charts at Number 2.

November 1988 - Teens worldwide turn green with envy when Kylie duets with hunky co-star Jason Donovan on Especially For You.

November 1990 - Her third album, Rhythm Of Love marks a new direction for the chanteuse, showing a more sophisticated and adult style of dance music.

September 1992 - She releases her Greatest Hits album and doesn't renew her contract with Stock, Aitken & Waterman, deciding she wants to move away from her "girl next door" image.

September 1994 - The star's first album with new label Deconstruction Records receives mixed reviews.

The single Confide In Me spends five weeks at Number 1 in Australia.

March 1998 - Kylie's sixth album, Impossible Princess, is her lowest selling album yet in the UK, but is her highest-selling album in Australia since her debut album.

April 1999 - She parts company with Deconstruction Records following a duet with the Pet Shop Boys on their Nightlife album and signs with Parlophone.

October 2000 - Her next album, Light Years, is strongly influenced by 70s disco artists, including Donna Summer.

NME writes: "Kylie's capacity for reinvention is staggering."

She receives the best reviews she's ever had and sells more than two million copies worldwide.

Spinning Around becomes her first UK Number 1 in 10 years and the video - with the petite crooner writhing around in gold hotpants - receives widespread airplay.

October 2001 - The diminutive star releases her eighth disco-infused album, Fever.

The lead single Can't Get You Out Of My Head becomes the biggest success of her career and reaches Number 1 in more than 40 countries, selling more than six million copies worldwide.

November 2004 - She releases her next greatest hits album, Ultimate Kylie, and plans the launch of the Showgirl - The Greatest Hits Tour.

The tour was intended to be the most extensive of her career and anticipated a total audience of more than 700,000.

May 2005 - After completing the European leg of her tour she is diagnosed with breast cancer.

December 2005 - Following successful treatment for her illness, Kylie announces her intention to begin work on a new album, with a planned release date of late 2006.

November 2006 - Kylie restarts her Showgirl tour in Oz.

Kylie's defining moments
03.01.2007

Kylie Minogue
The singer performed at the
Sydney Olympics in 2000 to an
estimated 3.7 billion viewers

Kylie Minogue's ability to transform herself has become the stuff of showbiz legend.

The pint-sized Aussie babe has successfully turned a soap stint into one of the most glittering pop careers in recent years, with a string of hit records, attention-grabbing outfits and high-energy performances.

We take a look at some of her defining moments since she first burst onto the scene as Charlene in Neighbours.

:: I Should Be So Lucky (1987)

Kylie released her first big hit in 1987 and it rocketed up the charts all over the world, reaching No 1 in her native Australia, the UK, France, Germany and Japan.

The video featured the curly-haired songstress bopping about a house in a black and white dress and played on the girl-next-door charm she'd work hard to shed in later years.

:: Michael Hutchence (1990s)

When the singer fell for Aussie rocker Michael Hutchence she waved goodbye to her squeaky clean image forever.

She began to emerge as something of a fashion icon and her music took on an edgier sound.

During an interview, the late INXS frontman was asked what his favourite hobby was, and he answered: "Corrupting Kylie."

:: Confide In Me (1994)

After leaving behind the bubblegum pop days with Stock, Aitken and Waterman, Kylie signed to Deconstruction Records and Confide In Me was her first single release as part of this new direction.

The catchy tune and its sultry video marked the start of the star's ability to reinvent her image and suggested she was a music talent worth keeping an eye on.

:: Sydney Olympics (2000)

The songstress performed a cover of Abba's Dancing Queen and her single On A Night Like This at the closing ceremony of the games.

She wowed the crowd with her vocals, not to mention her skimpy pink outfit, which she wore with a cloak of feathers.

It's estimated that a staggering 3.7 billion people in 220 countries tuned in to watch the show.

:: The gold hotpants (2000)

Following a period of pop uncertainty, Kylie burst back into the spotlight with the disco-classic Spinning Around.

The song was a hit but the revealing gold hotpants the singer wore in the video made an even bigger splash.

According to showbiz folklore, Kylie picked up the spangly shorts at a street market for a few pounds.

But after they catapulted her to new heights of stardom they were reportedly insured for more than a million pounds and have been displayed all over the country.

:: The Brits (2003)

Kylie's duet with Justin Timberlake was one of the highlights of the glitzy awards ceremony in 2003.

Dressed in a short black and silver number, Kylie gyrated with Justin through a sexy rendition of his chart hit Cry Me A River and Blondie's Rapture.

Justin was the envy of an army of men when he grabbed the singer's much-admired butt during the show, but it was Kylie who grabbed all the headlines.

:: Showgirl Tour (2005)

Kylie made a name for herself as a touring artist as soon as she kicked off her Showgirl extravaganza.

She was forced to call off her remaining gigs after being diagnosed with breast cancer and, when it resumed in November last year, the tour sold out in just six minutes.

So many fans tried to get their hands on tickets for her UK dates they crashed the Wembley Arena website.

THE wave of love that washed over Kylie Minogue as she made her thrilling British comeback left the princess of pop in tears.

At her sold-out New Year's Eve gig - her first UK show since her cancer ordeal - she paid tribute to her fans, saying: "This show is a dedication to all of you for your support and encouragement always."

Choked with emotion, her voice shook as she added: "I'm thrilled that you're spending New Year with me. This show was a last-minute decision but it's been worth it."

The ecstatic 12-thousand strong crowd, who had cheered her on all night long at Wembley Arena, certainly agreed. They had been treated to a dazzling spectacle as she went through six outfit changes in her three-hour extravaganza which finished in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Emerging for the first song, Better The Devil You Know, in a pink and white feather outfit, 38-year-old Kylie looked every inch the showgirl.

The crowd went wild as she let loose the animal in her for Kids and Red-Blooded Woman, changing into a skin-tight leopard costume and joining a writhing throng of near-naked male dancers.

Other jaw-dropping outfits included a sultry dancer, a 60s-inspired metallic mini for which she wore a Dusty Springfield wig, a catsuit with a multi-coloured veil, and a skirt that paid homage to Aussie-icon Dame Edna Everage topped off by a jaunty pink hat.

When Kylie first took to the stage, the cheers were deafening. She looking overwhelmed and repeatedly mouthed "thank you", before the noise died down and the music could start up.

But she soon got into her stride and raced through an electric set that included, Confide In Me and Spinning Around. Her big-band version of the Locomotion proved a huge hit, as did the delightfully cheesy Especially For You. Touchingly, during the final number Celebration - after she counted down the seconds to the new year - Kylie took advantage of a pause in the song to rush off stage and into the arms of her boyfriend, 40-year-old French actor Olivier Martinez.

An onlooker tells us: "It was a really emotional moment. Kylie gave him a long hug and kiss before she went back on to the stage beaming from ear to ear."

After such a brilliant show, we bet she wasn't the only one smiling...

Kylie Minogue
Bright as a feather ... Kylie's dazzling gig costume last night and, right, on her way to the concert

A simple quiz. Who has a diamante microphone, a batallion of semi-naked dancers, and gets a standing, screaming ovation before she has even sung a note? Kylie Minogue, of course, at her "homecoming" New Year’s Eve gig.

Bad weather may have cancelled celebrations in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Newcastle and Liverpool, but you get the feeling that, had this gig been held in any of those cities, the showgirl would have gone on. This is, after all, a woman who this time last year was awaiting the all-clear after the chemotherapy that forced the postponement of these dates. Beyond the walls of Wembley Arena, it was hard to imagine there was a single sequin or pink feather left to go round. But, hey, if all those bald flamingoes could have been here, they would have surely deemed the sacrifice worthwhile.

A surging Better The Devil You Know was momentarily delayed, such was the thunderous welcome. Given that recent tabloid speculation over her relationship with the French actor Olivier Martinez suggests she might actually be living out the song’s lyrics, it was a defiant opening in more ways than one. One had to conclude - as she sashayed on to the walkway, seemingly nary a care in the world - that Kylie Minogue is as hard as nails, and her latest incarnation seems to reflect that fact. Where once, pre-illness, Minogue was all about glitter, Moulin Rouge and glamour, there is a stronger, more abrasive edge to the styling now. Her make-up is harsher, more ravaged - more Dietrich than Monroe. The pre-show trailers showed her with eye sockets ringed with greasy black kohl, replacing all traces of Ramsay Street with something closer to Berlin in the 1930s.

But some things never change. If Madonna’s 2006 arena shows cemented her status as the Queen of Pop, the affection commanded by Kylie casts her as the People’s Princess. "Is the world still spinning around?" she enquired on In Your Eyes. Flanked by more six-packs than the draining board at a student party, it’s fair to say that the collective gaydar certainly was. For Shocked and What Do I Have To Do, she took to the stage with a Warholesque mop of tinder-dry hair and an apocalyptically distressed gold flapper dress, looking as if she had punched her way out of a riot at Studio 54.

Then, in the time it takes to wave a few thousand glow-sticks in a dark hangar, she went from burlesque to arabesque for a tabla-strewn Confide In Me, rich in Eastern sensuality.

Having designated an ad hoc dancefloor around the catwalk it seemed a shame to waste it, and - save for a recuperative Tears On My Pillow and Somewhere Over The Rainbow - this was a set that defied physical resistance. What, minutes before, had looked like a 1930s Hollywood soundstage was transformed into a gym. Not just any old gym, mind, but one that exceeded the wildest fantasies of Kylie’s adorers. Behold, then, our heroine dressed as a leopard wrestling with her troupe of male dancers. More hits from her 80s imperial phase followed - Locomotion, Hand On Your Heart, I Should Be So Lucky - before a glacial Can’t Get You Out Of My Head threatened to raise the roof. But there was one particular song that demanded to be heard. "There’s a party going on round here/A celebration to last throughout the year," she sang on Celebration.

Suddenly 2006 gave way to two thousand and heaven. The remaining 364 days have a hell of a lot to live up to.

"I am surprised to spend New Year's Eve with you," admitted Kylie to her loving masses. Same here. Do you think I am going to knock Kylie's comeback? On New Year's Eve? And after recovering from breast cancer? Are you unhinged?

Like the Eels sang, Kylie "is a sweet little thing". And the most inoffensive pop star in gold hot-pants there has ever been. Darn it, this is Charlene Mitchell from Neighbours, the one with big frizzy hair, a gorgeous smile, the wedding and so on. A tiny, really tiny, monument to Kylie should be mounted in Hyde Park and the reception tonight is suitably enormous. Adoration is back.

She strutted on stage with a mammoth pink fluffy Mohican type of hair and belts out her first really "adult" single, "Better the Devil You Know". She was surrounded by a plethora of almost entirely naked men, sporting blue feathers and sparkly underwear. Clearly, this was not going to be a restrained gig. There was a gamut of fake feathers, and pecs. And "Better the Devil You Know" is a suitably rousing start.

The song was released about the time Michael Hutchence was gleefully "corrupting" her. He even wrote "Suicide Blonde" for her. He also prompted Nick Cave to say the song contained one of "pop music's violent and distressing lyrics".

Six years later, the dark song led to Kylie's greatest collaboration on the grisly "Where The Wild Roses Grow", which tonight is sung with Kylie wearing a leopard skin outfit and writhing on gymnasium equipment. It is quite a sight for the hardcore fans who have stumped up over £60 and sacrificed their New Year's Eve for a night out in stormy North London for this burlesque and extremely camp show - which imitates her new hero, Bette Midler.

It is hard to imagine that there was a period in the early 90's when Kylie couldn't sell out the Dog and Duck, but her writhing reinvention on the sumptuous "Spinning Around" perked the nation's perception. Middle-aged men with receding hairlines embraced her and the pocket-sized popster became OK to fancy. Her knee even got groped by pervy Parky, but unlike Meg Ryan, she didn't flinch. Kylie has always been keen to impress her peers.

The music critic, Chris True, once commented that her "cuteness makes those rather vapid tracks bearable". He was referring to the pretty execrable Stock Aitken and Waterman period. Usually, I cannot listen to "Locomotion" or "I Should Be So Lucky" without coming out in a rash but tonight, both tracks, which are played back to back, work rather well. And it hardly matters that her voice has always been rather thin tonight because there is so much appreciation. The gig comes to a close with a large roar of "LaLaLa LaLaLaLaLa", her most infectious and overplayed hit, "I Can't Get You Out of My Head", a pop song of some considerable genius from the Fever album and which was memorably described by Rolling Stone magazine, "Campy as a tent full of Boy Scouts". Ultimately, this is a perfectly choreographed and rather lovely return of Charlene Mitchell.

Kylie Minogue

Smiling and looking stylish, this was Kylie Minogue ahead of her New Year's Eve show at Wembley Arena.

And it seemed the 38-year-old Australian singer had double cause to look happy.

The concert was her first in Britain since her successful battle with breast cancer. And her wayward boyfriend Olivier Martinez was due to be guest of honour at the after-show party.

He flew to London with Miss Minogue to provide emotional support for her at the comeback concert.

The couple appear to have patched things up after a row over his friendship with Israeli model Sarai Givati, 24.

The 40-year-old French actor was pictured showing Miss Givati around Paris for three days.

Miss Minogue flew from Australia to confront Martinez, and they are believed to have had heart-to-heart talks over Christmas.

She is thought to have told him she wanted them to make a 'serious go of things'. But there are rumours that he has given her an ultimatum, telling her to move to Paris if she wants the relationship to work out.

The show launched the British leg of her Showgirl Homecoming tour.
