WISHING HER WELL: PeteNO-ONE is willing Kylie Minogue to a speedy recovery more than the man who made her a star - music mogul Pete Waterman.
Pete celebrated his 60th birthday yesterday and had been planning to see Kylie on one of her Manchester dates this week.
Kylie has now rescheduled two of her concerts for this Sunday and next Monday after they were cancelled because of her continued throat problems.
Pete is certain he'll catch one of the later concerts and meet Kylie before the month is out.
With his landmark 60th to celebrate, Pete is in the mood to reminisce - and he still remembers the day he first met Kylie - then just a young soap actress from Australia hoping to break into pop music - at a nightclub in Blackpool.
She arrived on a cold winter's day as the seaside resort was being battered by wind and rain. It was December and she had just flown in from the balmy heat of hometown Melbourne.
"We were filming a programme for The Hitman & Her (the hugely popular 1980s music and dance TV show) and as soon as she turned up we all knew she was something special.
"Everyone told me to leave it well alone, but I was convinced she would be a star," he tells me.
Proud
"I am so proud of her - of what she has achieved. Everyone rubbished her and wrote her off when she first started working with me, but now she is arguably the world's biggest pop superstar."
Recording with the infamous Stock Aitken and Waterman "hit factory", Kylie had the massive songs that first found her fame - the likes of I Should Be So Lucky, Better The Devil You Know and Shocked - that remain fan favourites and staples of her live shows today.
Pete says: "Kylie is so switched on and there is nothing false about her. She is the consummate professional and everyone loves her.
"I'm still hoping to catch one of her concerts this time around. I would have seen her on Monday in Manchester, but I had the small matter of my 60th birthday party to attend.
"But we'll definitely catch up once the gigs are over and probably go out for a coffee and a chat or something."
Kylie aside, if you ask Pete Waterman - dubbed the Hitman because of all the hit records he produced from his twin bases in Manchester and London during the 1980s and '90s - what the highlight of his glittering career has been he has absolutely no hesitation in revealing all.
The Beatles
"It was the night I worked with The Beatles," he says. "The night before I worked with them they were called John Lennon and The Silver Beatles, but they changed their name the next day and I was there for The Beatles' first gig - it's occasions like that I will never forget."
And though his success - illustrated by wall upon wall of gold and platinum discs - is easy to measure over his extended career, Pete Waterman is also a man whose persona is made up of equal measures of personal tragedy and triumph.
The death of his son Paul - the man who set-up and ran Pete's Manchester base at an old converted church behind Deansgate railway station - a few years ago hit the Hitman particularly hard.
So hard, in fact, that he has never been able to set foot in the building since that day. He also put his TV career on hold, but now wants to get back into it.
"I'm already talking to a few people about a variety of TV projects which look quite exciting," he says.
So what do you give the man who has everything for his 60th birthday?
"I want more happiness," he says without hesitation.

ca c'est bon, non?Olivier Martinez says his love helped girlfriend Kylie Minogue win her breast cancer battle.
The 'Taking Lives' actor - who was described by Kylie as "the most honourable man I've met" during her illness - insists he did everything he possibly could for his lover.
He told Cosmopolitan magazine: "I didn't think about myself at the time. All I did was try my best in the situation. It's important to be honest with yourself. What you say should be what you do. Don't just say, 'I love you'. Show it."
The 41-year-old French star has also revealed his attitude towards death changed when he was involved in a horrific motorbike accident more than a decade ago.
He said: "I broke my back in a motorcycle accident and came close to dying. Doctors told me I'd end up in a wheelchair but I was lucky. The accident helped me learn the true price of life. It put everything in perspective - money, fame. However, I'm no longer afraid of dying, I'm afraid of suffering."

Kylie Minogue musste ihre Comebacktour unterbrechen.London (dpa) - Die australische Pop-Sängerin Kylie Minogue hat wegen einer schweren Grippe ihre Comeback-Tour unterbrechen müssen. Bei einem Konzert in der englischen Stadt Manchester musste die 38-Jährige bereits nach 45 Minuten von der Bühne gehen, weil sie nicht mehr weitersingen konnte.
«Tut mir leid. Ich bekomme heute nicht alle Wörter raus», entschuldigte sie sich. Zwei weitere Konzerte wurden kurzfristig abgesagt. Der nächste Auftritt soll nun erst am Donnerstag stattfinden.
Die britische Presse spekulierte am Montag darüber, ob sich Minogue nach überstandener Chemotherapie mit ihrer «Showgirl Homecoming»-Tour möglicherweise zu viel zugemutet habe. Bei der Sängerin war im Mai 2005 Brustkrebs festgestellt worden.

Monday 15 January tickets now valid for Sunday 21 January
Tuesday 16 January tickets now valid for Monday 22 January
Anyone who can't attend the rearranged dates should return their tickets to the point of purchase no later than THIS FRIDAY (Fri 19 January) to claim a refund.
Please note, there is still no news about the show that was cut short on Saturday 13 January.

And the Channel 4 broadcast on Saturday night of the Showgirl Homecoming Concert was also a big hit, with more than 1.7 million viewers tuning in to see the Showgirl live in her hometown of Melbourne last December!

After being forced to pull out early from Saturday night's Showgirl Homecoming performance at the Manchester Evening News Arena due to a moderately severe respiratory tract infection, doctors have today insisted that Kylie Minogue "not perform in the immediate future".
Accordingly tonight (15/1) and Tuesday (16/1) night's shows will not take place. Promoters are hoping to re-schedule at the earliest opportunity. We currently anticipate that Thursday and Friday nights shows will not be affected.
Whilst we await the all clear from her doctors we, wish Kylie a speedy recovery and hope to be able to confirm her return to the stage soon.

Kylie Minogue has been forced to pull out of two shows in Manchester due to illness.
As we told you over the weekend, the pop star axed the first show at the MEN Arena on Saturday mid-way through the set due to a moderately severe respiratory tract infection.
Doctors have ordered her to rest and not perform in the immediate future.
Accordingly the singer has cancelled the dates tonight and tomorrow night (January 15/16).
The final two shows in the city on Thursday and Friday are at the time of press still scheduled to go ahead.
The cancelled dates will be rearranged as soon as possible.

Kylie musste ein Konzert abbrechen.London (RPO). Wird sie jemals wieder die Alte sein? Vor einigen Wochen in Australien, jetzt auch in England: Die australische Sängerin Kylie Minogue hat schon wieder ein Konzert ihrer Comeback-Tournee abbrechen müssen. Grund: eine Grippeinfektion.
Sie habe am Samstag nur die Hälfte des eigentlich zweistündigen Auftritts in Manchester geschafft, erklärte ihr Sprecher John Bills. "Mehrere Mitglieder der Crew, der Tour-Manager und Kylie hatten Grippe, aber sie wollte niemanden enttäuschen", sagte er. "Sie wollte versuchen, die Show zu schaffen, musste aber abbrechen."
Bills betonte, die Erkrankung stehe nicht in Zusammenhang mit Minogues Behandlung wegen Brustkrebs. Nach der Diagnose im Mai 2005 hatte die Sängerin eineinhalb Jahre pausiert, bevor sie zur Erleichterung ihrer Fans im vergangenen November ihre "Showgirl"-Tournee in Sydney wieder aufnahm. Bills erklärte, über den geplanten zweiten von fünf Auftritten in Manchester am Montag sei noch nicht entschieden.

Kylie managed to sing only a handful of songs.Pop star Kylie Minogue has pulled out of a concert because of flu, her manager has said.
The Australian singer was halfway though her concert at Manchester when she cancelled the rest of the show.
Minogue, 38, launched the UK leg of her Showgirl Homecoming Tour on New Year's Eve, following her recovery from breast cancer treatment.
She has already played seven dates at Wembley Arena which were to be followed by six concerts in Manchester.
Jason, one fan at the city's MEN Arena concert, told BBC News 24 that from the start of the concert the singer seemed to be "lacking in energy".
She then admitted to the audience that she was struggling with flu, he said.
Oz, another concert-goer, said: "She announced that her voice wasn't gonna make it, and therefore she was going to have to do one last song.
"Eventually she came up with her sister and they did a great finale, but then off she went. The crowd were distraught."
'Busy schedule'
Alex Stanger, from the BBC's Entertainment 24, said the concert was a "very important show" for the singer.
But she said Minogue's manager had confirmed the cancellation had been down to flu and that she was too tired to continue the concert.
Some other members of the crew had also had been ill, she said.
Ms Stanger added: "She's had a very busy week this week. She has not only had her new live album come out, she's been at Wembley laying a foundation stone with her handprints in, she's been launching her fragrance and a new waxwork has been unveiled.
"It's a very busy time for her in the spotlight."
Cancer diagnosis
The singer began the run of concerts in Manchester on Friday.
Minogue had been forced to postpone her original Showgirl world tour after her breast cancer diagnosis in May 2005.
Minogue underwent surgery in Australia two days later and finished her chemotherapy in December 2005.
It had been hoped she would also play at this year's Glastonbury festival, after pulling out of a headlining slot in 2005 following her cancer diagnosis.
But earlier this month festival organiser Emily Eavis told BBC 6 Music Minogue was too busy to join this year's line-up.
Minogue's record company, Parlophone, has also said she is working on material which could be released in 2007.

KYLIE Minogue MEN Arena - Four stars
EVERYWHERE you looked there were adoring men, from the elegant duo with slicked back black hair and matching white shirts, to the stubble-headed gang whooping and waving their arms around, to the balding dad with his two daughters.
Seldom do gay icons have such appeal for Mr 2.4 children. All gazing with delight upon the return of the ultimate soapstar superstar, Kylie Minogue. Coquettish and gorgeous as ever, her tiny body shows no signs of the ravages of breast cancer. Although the illness is never mentioned, it hangs heavy in the air, some two years after the diagnosis shocked the world.
When she first appears through a trap-door in full feathery pink Las Vegas showgirl regalia the applause is thunderous, dewy eyes gazing at this survivor - the "ah, bless hers" drowned out by the stamping of feet.
But Kylie doesn’t need our sympathy. She’d have had a sell-out audience with or without cancer, it’s just that her triumph over tragedy has added an emotional appeal to her lavish camptastic show, given an edginess to the woman that her music sometimes lacks.
Nostalgia
As soon as she starts singing Better the Devil You Know, the first in a string of hits that transport us back to the days when Kylie had a poodle perm and her Neighbours beau Jason Donovan was more famous than her, you know you’re in for a heady night of nostalgia, glamour and feel-good tunes.
Although she has a cold, Kylie holds her own for more than two hours and there are no dodgy notes right up to her final songs: Especially for You (come on Jason, join your old mucker on stage!) and Love at First Sight.
The Aussie’s pint-sized proportions and girlie grin bely a steely determination to out-show Madonna - she even steals a Madge number, reprising Vogue in thigh high patent boots. She might not have the Queen of Pop’s moves but anyone who can totter around so nimbly in a succession of staggering glittery stilettos deserves our unreserved admiration.
Spectacular
She’s aided and abetted by her Mancunian style guru, William Baker who directed and designed the spectacular sets (and watch out for the amazingly bendy acrobat Terry Kvasnik as he’s also a Manc).
Baker deserves much credit, taking us from a Hollywood gym in the late 50s one minute to a futuristic dance of the Cybermen the next, with a dash through the desert, a1980s London nightclub and 1920s Cabaret in between. He’d earn millions if he could take this to Caesar’s Palace, but he’d need perfect pop of tunes like Can’t get you out of My Head and I should be so Lucky to complement his creativity.
And he dresses Kylie in eight different outfits which all (apart from the encore number - even Kylie can’t make shapeless culottes look sexy) flatter his delightful muse, the pop artiste-supreme.

Kylie lässt ihren Olivier hoch leben.Zum Geburtstag ihres französischen Freundes Olivier Martinez am Freitag hat Popsängerin Kylie Minogue eine sehr romantische Umgebung gewählt.
Sie mietete nach einem Bericht des britischen "Daily Mirror" die umgerechnet fast 800 Euro teure Moulin-Rouge-Suite im Malmaison-Hotel in Manchester. Allerdings sahen die Anweisungen der 38-Jährigen nicht nach großer Party aus. Die Australierin ließ Süßigkeiten, Chips und Alkohol aus der Minibar entfernen. "Wir wurden angewiesen, alle Versuchungen aus ihrer Suite herauszuräumen", berichtete ein Hotelangestellter.
Minogue und der nun 41-jährige Martinez sind seit Jahren ein Paar. Nach ihrer Genesung hielt die Australierin es öffentlich der Liebe und Unterstützung ihres Freundes zugute, dass sie nach ihrer Krebsdiagnose nicht aufgegeben und die Chemotherapie durchgestanden hatte.

Kylie Minogue and Olivier Martinez.Pint size pop princess Kylie Minogue is treating boyfriend to a T-total birthday bash in a swanky Manchester hotel.
Minogue, who suffered a cancer scare last year, ordered hotel staff to remove all booze, chocolate and snack foods from their room., seemingly to avoid any temptation to over indulge in the ‘finer things in life’.
Olivier Martinez, who turns 41 today will enjoy... well, not a lot as Minogue clamps down on anything ‘fatty’ or ‘alcoholic’.
On a positive note, the singer must be expecting another sort of ‘indulgence’ as she has, allegedly, booked two of the rooms either side of her own. Perhaps she’s worried of waking the neighbours....?!!

Kylie unveiled her plaque on the last day of the sold out London run of her 'Showgirl - Homecoming' tour at Wembley Arena, which arrives in Manchester this evening for the first of six dates.

The "I Can't Get You Out Of My Head" singer follows in the footsteps of Madonna, Sir Cliff Richard and Status Quo in having a permanent plaque outside Wembley Arena.
Minogue revealed the plaque on the last day of her run of gigs at the venue as part of her Showgirl - Homecoming tour.

Kylie and Peter Tudor, Wembley Arena’s General ManagerKylie Minogue has been handed a special award by Wembley Arena following her sold-out seven night stint at the venue.
The Australian pop megastar’s tenancy at the famous arena came to an end last night (Tuesday, January 9) after playing to a total of 79,000 fans.
The simple silver memento marks the fact that she is one of the most successful female artists to play the flagship London venue.
Kylie’s ‘Showgirl: Homecoming Live In Sydney’ CD and DVD was released on Monday (January 8).

NEW KYLIE WAXWORK UNVEILED!
11.01.2007Kylie's pop royalty has been reaffirmed with the launch of a record-breaking fourth figure at Madame Tussauds London!
Kylie has also scored a unique number one in becoming the first 'scented' figure - fragranced with her own signature perfume 'Darling'. The unveiling is the first at the attraction for 2007 and coincides with Kylie's return to UK soil for the Showgirl Homecoming tour.
According to Ben Lovett, Press Officer for Madame Tussauds: "Kylie continues to break all the records at Madame Tussauds. She is the only person other than The Queen to be created four times and continues to be among our most popular of figures for fans from around the world."
Kylie's very first waxwork was unveiled to the public way back in 1989, followed by a second model in 1998, and the third in 2002. Work on the fourth figure of Kylie began in October 2006 with Kylie attending a special hand-casting session in November. Kylie has granted sittings to Madame Tussauds on two previous occasions in 1989 and 1998.
To make the wax model as true to life as possible, Kylie's backstage photographer took specially detailed hair, make-up and costume photographs to help the Tussauds sculptors.
The new Kylie figure will feature in the attraction's interactive A-list Blush area in a vibrant red silk dress, recreating her triumphant concert appearance where she descends on a sparkling crescent moon.

Die neue Figur zeigt die Sängerin in einem luftigen roten Kostüm, wie sie es nach der Erholung von einer Krebserkrankung bei ihrer derzeit laufenden Comeback-Tour trägt. Begründet wurde die Auswechslung von einem Sprecher mit der grossen Popularität des Popstars. In the world of waxworks the Australian pop princess is second only to Queen Elizabeth who has been moulded an astounding 22 times.
Her mannequin is dressed in a spangly red dress, similar to one she wore on her recent tour, and scented with her signature perfume 'Darling'.
Madame Tussauds spokesman Ben Lovett said: "Kylie continues to break all the records at Madame Tussauds. She is the only person other than The Queen to be created four times and continues to be among our most popular of figures for fans from around the world."
The unveiling of the model today was the first this year and marks Kylie's return to the UK for her Showgirl Homecoming tour.
In a high-profile come-back following her battle with breast cancer, the singer performed in front of some 79,000 fans during a seven-day tenancy at Wembley Arena.
The former Neighbours star was first sculpted in 1989 and then again in 1998 and 2002.
She looks set to leave her mark across the capital this year, having already unveiled a cast of her hand prints on London's new Square of Fame, outside Wembley Arena.
The Victoria & Albert Museum will also open its Kylie exhibition on February 8, when fans will be able to get a glimpse of the mechanics overalls she wore as Charlene from Neighbours in the 80s as well as her iconic gold lame hotpants.
