Steve Irwin and Kylie Minogue personalities of the year
Matthew Ricketson
31.12.2006
Steve Irwin | Kylie MinogueTHE crocodile hunter, Steve Irwin, has been posthumously named Australia's man of the year by readers of The Age online.
Singer Kylie Minogue, who returned to performing in 2006 after being treated for breast cancer, was named Australia's woman of the year, with 21 per cent of the votes.
Minogue was scheduled to perform her Showgirl Homecoming show at Wembley Arena in London on New Year's Eve.
Irwin, the wildlife warrior who was killed by a stingray while filming in Queensland last September, garnered more votes - 2343 (28 per cent) - than any other candidate for the online poll, male or female.
Irwin, equal parts conservationist, entertainer and confessed dag, was extraordinarily popular both overseas and in Australia, as the public outpouring of emotion after his death confirmed.
On September 5 items about Irwin filled all 10 spots on the lists of most-viewed stories for both theage.com.au and its sister site, smh.com.au.
It was the first time this had happened on the news sites, both published by Fairfax Media, owner of The Age.
The online poll threw up some surprising results: swimmer Ian Thorpe, who announced his retirement from competitive swimming late last year after a stellar career winning five Olympic gold medals, finished 10th in the men's poll, two places behind the Prime Minister, John Howard.
The new Deputy Leader of the Opposition, Julia Gillard, was placed fourth on the women's list.
Todd Russell and Brant Webb, whose rescue from the Beaconsfield mine after 14 days trapped underground, attracted worldwide media attention, finished ninth on the men's list.

HAPPY NEW HERE, KYLIE!
Joy as lover joins her for 2007 bash
Alice Walker
31.12.2006KYLIE MINOGUE beams with delight as boyfriend OLIVIER MARTINEZ joins her for a special New Year party tonight.
Kylie & Olivier walking in the pouring rainThe couple were all smiles when they were pictured in pouring rain after flying in to London yesterday.
Kylie will see in 2007 on stage at Wembley Arena - and Taking Lives star Olivier will be guest of honour at a backstage party after the gig.
Kylie, 38, scrapped an end-of-showcelebration on the Aussie leg of her Showgirl Homecoming tour earlier this month to fly to Paris and confront Olivier amid rumours he was having a fling with an Israeli model.
But it seems the pair have now sorted out their differences. A source said: "Kylie being back on stage on New Year's Eve means a great deal to Olivier after all she's been through.
"This year has been tough for both of them and he is really looking forward to them celebrating the start of 2007 together."
Generous Kylie has forked out £50,000 of her own money to lay on the bash as a thank-you to the cast and crew on her tour. Hundreds of bottles of expensive champagne have been ordered and posh caterers will provide a fantastic buffet.
An insider said: "Kylie will see in the New Year on stage, but as soon as she finishes her last track the party will start.
"All the cast and crew are really excited about it. Backstage has been transformed into a winter wonderland and no expense has been spared when it comes to food and booze."
"Everyone was disappointed when she cancelled the party in Oz. This will more than make up for it."
